Using An iPhone With US Cellular

It’s what a lot of US Cellular customers ask for, but right now it’s just not happening.  I’ll try to explain why you can’t unlock it, and how long it might be before you can use an iPhone with US Cellular.

Iphone US Cellular

The iPhone runs on a GSM network, but US Cellular works on a CDMA based network.  It’s not a bad thing, just an issue because Apple hasn’t made a CDMA version yet.  Another carrier with this same issue is Verizon.  If you’re wondering why there has been such a boom in the Android and Samsung Galaxy style phones, it’s because these CDMA carriers needed an iPhone competitor.

At this point, Verizon is the largest cell phone carrier in the country so Apple is under major pressure to create a version that would be compatible.  When this happens, chances are the iPhone will work with US Cellular even if they don’t officially carry it.  Right now, people on the gsm network can crack the iPhone and unlock it by switching out the sim card inside and it’s then usable even if their provider doesn’t carry the phone.

We are all hoping that the iPhone eventually makes its way to US Cellular, but the competition has caught up and luckily US Cellular has decided to start bringing in the newest and hottest phones available to them.

BlackBerry Bold 9650 Details

After a long wait from customers, US Cellular stated today that the BlackBerry Bold 9650 will finally join the lineup on August 18th, 2010.

The opening price for the Bold will be $230 after a 2 year contract, but they have also said there will be a $70 mail in rebate that would bring the price down to $160. Not bad for a first-day price, and it will probably drop again soon after the release date.

“When you combine the BlackBerry Bold with our industry-first programs such as Overage Protection and Battery Swap, our customers can have a powerful smartphone with a unique wireless experience,” said Edward Perez, US Cellular’s vice president of sales and marketing.

There aren’t really any differences between this version of the Bold 9650 and the models you will find at the other carriers. That doesn’t mean it’s lacking in any of the new technology though. Features include a full QWERTY keybaord, 2.4 inch high visibility screen, optical trackpad, 3 megapixel camera, MicroSD card compatible, GPS, Wi-Fi, and it will have BlackBerry 5 running as the operating system. That operating system will probably be upgraded to BlackBerry 6 in the near future. It’s unclear at this point how close that is to a street release but it’s important to note that this will be BlackBerry 6 compatible when it’s ready.

This phone is a big improvement over the current US Cellular BlackBerry lineup that includes the Curve 8530 and the Pearl Flip 8230. If you were waiting for a better option, or an alternative to the Android phones this will be a great choice.

US Cellular Adds HTC Desire

U.S. Cellular has finally announced when it plans to bring it’s second Android phone into stores. The HTC Desire will be available to customers online and in stores August 27th. This is great news for customers who have been asking for more smartphone service from U.S. Cellular and it won’t stop here. They plan to release 5 Android style phones this year and the Desire is only the second which means Christmas will probably be an exciting and busy time for the U.S. Cellular stores.

Edward Perez, vice president of sales for U.S. Cellular said today that, “For us, it’s not just about delivering this array of cutting-edge phones that our customers want and deserve. We also have their backs with industry first, customer focused programs, like Overage Protection and Battery Swap. We love making our customers lives easier.”

The stats on the HTC Desire are impressive to say the least. It’s extremely thin and the touchscreen that clocks in just under 4 inches is one of the brightest and clearest screens on the market. The camera will also feature a 5-megapixel camera (with flash) and have GPS integrated with Google. You will also be able to connect to the internet via wi-fi if you are in range of a wireless router. Another exciting addition is that you will be able to add on a tethered data plan which means you can hook the phone up to your laptop and use the phone as a modem.

U.S. Cellular has long been thought to be “behind-the-times” when it comes to technology, but this addition puts them right at the front of the pack with the ever-changing cellular market. I can’t wait to see what they have lined up next.
